ABOUT US

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Young people (male or female) ages 14-18 may participate

  • Teams are coached and the program administered by volunteers.

  • Basketball season runs the second week of January through the end of March

  • Churches pay basic league fee per team (due no later than December 31)

  • Churches supply their own uniforms

Fees cover in part, a small accident insurance policy, referees, player trophies, supplies and other basic, overall league expense

The OWACA program operates from Mid-January through the end of March, with playoffs and champion series following. The season concludes with an awards banquet, a three-point shooting contest, a slam dunk contest and an all-star game. The awards banquet includes a meal and a trophy presentation. Every OWACA player receives a trophy with the sportsmanship award being the most coveted team and individual trophy.

In recent years games have been played at the Salvation Army facility located at 7651 South Central Avenue in Los Angeles. Teams participating have included Holman United Methodist, Messiah Baptist, Mt. Moriah Baptist, Salvation Army South Los Angeles, Zion Temple Community Church, Second AME, Faith United Methodist, New Mt. Pleasant Baptist, and Trinity Baptist.  The listed churches sponsored their respective teams.   OWACA has also received funding from The LA Olympic 84 Foundation.

Plans for our up-coming season have begun. The next league meeting is scheduled for January 4th, 7:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist, 2040 West Jefferson Boulevard, Los Angeles.   If you have a team interested in participating in the upcoming program, you may use the forms provided on this website.
